Lethal in disguise

Organizations release study on the health effects of crowd-control weapons

The abusive use of crowd-control weapons (rubber bullets, pepper spray, tear gas, etc.) by the police to disperse demonstrations, which results in serious harm to citizens, is a recurring problem in both democratic countries and authoritarian regimes.

Although these violations have occurred in disregard of international norms and have already been denounced by civil society organizations, it has still been necessary to produce more data and consolidated analysis on the real health consequences of these types of weapons.

For example, what injuries can be caused by water cannons? What effects do the chemicals in tear gas and pepper spray have on the body? How serious is the damage caused by the incorrect and abusive use of rubber bullets?

On Wednesday, February 8, the International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations (INCLO) and Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), in partnership with Conectas, will release in Brazil the report “Lethal in Disguise – The Health Consequences of Crowd-Control Weapons”.

The free event will be held in the Pedro Conde hall of the University of São Paulo Law School, starting at 7 pm, and will be followed by drinks with the speakers.

In addition to presenting a comprehensive overview of the harm caused by the incorrect and abusive use of crowd-control weapons in various parts of the world, the report also contains policy recommendations for their safe use.
