Candidates for positions on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ought to submit their proposals publicly to civil society organizations, which should be able to confirm them. This was the request made to the Presidency of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) by 55 organizations from the region.
They want the opportunity to hear the proposals and ask questions to the candidates, “with the objective of promoting the development of the strong and independent human rights protection system that the hemisphere needs to address the numerous requests for justice”.
The organizations also called for the OAS Member States to guarantee the legitimacy of the bodies by selecting people who have the independence, impartiality and competence necessary to hold office.
