A number of non-governmental organizations from southern countries have condemned the threat by the British prime minister David Cameron to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Convention on Human Rights.
In a letter sent to the premier, the organizations claim that the intention alone to denounce the convention represents a blow to human rights and will weaken the Commonwealth – a group of more than 50 countries that cooperate together to, among other things, promote democracy, human rights and world peace.
The organizations also list the international damage that will be done if the withdrawal by the United Kingdom becomes official, namely that it will encourage regimes that abuse rights, undercut future British attempts to promote democracy in developing countries and set back important gains in the Commonwealth.
