In light of the coronavirus crisis, The CNDH (The National Human Rights Council), a body linked to the Ministry for Women, Family and Human Rights and of which Conectas is a member, is calling for the Brazilian government to adopt urgent measures to protect people living on the streets.
One of the actions requested by the institution is the allocation of resources to the Municipal Social Welfare and Health Funds and to municipalities, as well as the payment of social housing rent for all those living on the streets throughout the pandemic.
The body also highlights the importance of providing food, clothes and basic items, and of allowing homeless people to carry out personal hygiene in public education and sporting establishments that are equipped with bathrooms.
The Council also stresses that any social welfare institution that refuses to assist people living under these conditions, will be committing an ‘illegal act’ and will be subject to legal action.
