On Wednesday (22nd) of May, PL (Bill) 1958/2021, known as PL for Public Service Quotas, was approved in the Senate Plenary. A bill that validates the law for another ten years and establishes the need for review afterwards. Now, it will be passed for vote in the Chamber of Deputies.

On Tuesday (22nd) of May, a day before the vote in the Senate, organizations from the black movement and all organized civil society signed a letter in favor of the PL, which guarantees the continuity of quotas in the public service.

Signed by more than 500 entities, including Conectas, the document talks about the attempt to make policy unfeasible since the beginning of the process, through amendments that change the purpose of the law and avoiding resources that try to delay the approval of the project.

Law 12,990/2014 has been in use until June 10, 2024, but the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Flávio Dino decided to extend it until Congress evaluates the renewal. However, the decision still needs to be endorsed by the other Ministers of the Court for it to be valid.

In the text, the organizations ask that the continuity of the policy of racial quotas in the public service be guaranteed, “as well as the maintenance and expansion of vacancies for black people from 20% to 30%, incorporating indigenous people and quilombolas into the policy, in accordance with demands of the black population”.
